Mitsos Goes to Jail

1 min read

9/15/19

On my last visit to Aliveri, September 2019, I stop by Konstandina and Mitsos’s house. They meet me at the gate with bad news: Mitsos has just been arrested for driving without a diploma, a license. “Ah bad, bad news,” he tells me. He plies me with his most compelling charms of persuasion: sad, pleading eyes, then a gesture to his family. Implication: what will become of them all? Can I help him out with 300 euros? Otherwise, he is doomed to 30 days in jail.

Later, after taking photos around Aliveri, I stop by their house, this time with a round of freshly made iced coffees. Mitsos is gone, I imagine trying to round up 300 euros. I ask Konstandina if she is okay. Mitsos in jail for a month? She seems  calm and non-plussed and merely shrugs her shoulders. We continue sipping coffee and she chats with two neighbors who have dropped by. Mitsos in jail—it is probably not the first time.
